Enola Homosexual
My coworker Sean has a desk calendar which tells you facts about baseball. Today's entry was a little over-zealous with the search and replace:

The perils of search-and-replace

That's amusing... as is your subject.

It reminds me of [info]knirirr's story whereby an overzealous spellchecker insisted that someone had been "buttbuttinated"....

that's badass. we did have plans to see it with a few friends of ours, but I'm pretty sure the plans have been trashed, so we should make some new plans.

It took me a minute to figure out why the grammar made no sense.

Then lo did the light dawn and did I realise that America indeed is SILLY.

You know... they could have at least bothered to also make sure the article matched. "a African-American"?? /shudder

Funnily enough, after only 8 months in the US, I find myself wanting to call our Indian staff Native-American. Except they're dot-not-feather.

I don't think I even talk about native americans enough to confuse them with Indians ;)

what we natives do is say "Indian Indian not American Indian" :P

Up here in Soviet Canuckistan, all my native-type friends call themselves "Indians" and we call the other type "East Indians." I suspect that's kind of an entrenched usage, because I can think of a song from about 1985 that uses it.

It took me an embarassing amount of time to figure this out... because I was certain that they were referring to some graphic text by that name. (Yes, I should be shot.)

I thought "42" was baseball's African-American number.

For the non-fan: no player can wear "42" (Jackie Robinson's old number) because it's been retired from baseball in his honor. He was the first Black player in the white major leagues. Given his grace under pressure and the way he played, I suspect that he's the reason that "42" is also the meaning of life.

I've seen Surya Bonaly on lists of African-American skaters, and Nelson Mandela on lists of African-American heroes.
