Someone evidently thinks it's amusing to create an online IQ test and make people sit through pages and pages of questions, then set them up with a cookiea unique ID in the URL which maps to their IP address such that they see a high number in the graphic they post in their blogs, but their readers see some sad little number like 80.

I can't see how you can get enough amusement value out of this to justify the work that must have gone into building it.

and this person demonstrates how smart she is :)

I assume it's IP related, as I get the same result opening another browser in which I'm not logged in to LJ as I do from the browser from which I took the test.

Dual WAN here - very much IP based. PC on the left shows 80, PC on the right shows 145.

It might not have been that much work, if they put it together from existing parts. There are scads of online quiz sites out there, so getting code for that shouldn't be difficult, especially if all the input goes to /dev/null.

a bunch of them (one of the "X is love" memes, for example) also identify what LJ they're in and show X as the owner of the current friends page. So the tools are out there for even more sophisticated semi-vulnerabilities.

I guess it goes to show -- if you don't ahve control over the server itself, you are at the mercy of the sysop. Another good reason to be cautious on the web.

I'm sort of surprised nobody's pulled this prank before, honestly.

I remember discussing something very similar many months ago now.

Did I ever tell you about the "I LOVE (name)" stunt? (Or were you around for that one?)

don't think I've heard about the "I love [name]" stunt... though in this context I can guess. Is there a post you can point to?

Yeah, it's pretty sad. I've already seen a few of them on my friends page.

It sounds quite amusing to me. This is the first I've heard of it though.

it's not amusement at the victims, it's the thrill of perpetrating a new and original hack

Oh I dunno, I found it quite amusing, especially figuring out just what was going on and how it was done...

Yeah, figured it out this morning when I woke up and checked my friends list. I think I'll edit my post and put a funny picture there instead.

gah... using the IP to drive functionality in your webapp is such a lame, amateur mistake!
