Why Senator Bill Napoli is an arsehole.

PBS asks him why the new SD anti-abortion law doesn't include the possibility of abortions for rape victims. He says "Well, it has an exception if the woman's life is in danger. That could include some rape victims. I mean, if you were saving your virginity for marriage... and you were religious... getting raped would be really really bad for you."

I don't really have enough words to express my contempt and anger.

So if I get raped it's not as traumatic for me? Bullshit.

So, he's Ok with abortions so that your religious family don't find you are pregnant and murder you?

Thats not quite what he said. He's basically saying that if you get suicidal because of a rape, an abortion will make you all better.

Maybe they do, and it's just not the sort of thing he'd talk about.

He seems to be pointing out the loophole - if you can claim to be depressed, you can still have an abortion. Oh, wait, that;s not actually a ban on abortions at all!

But somehow, that's only supposed to affect unmarried "religious" women (I put it in quotes because I don't think he's including, say, devoted Dianic goddess-worshippers in that category).

That's the type he mentioned. I'm sure if it came to it, it would include every woman who wanted an abortion in the first place, more or less as it does in the UK

I don't believe this to be true. If the politicians felt that wishy-washy about it, they wouldn't be going to these extremes to outlaw abortion. Why would people go to all this trouble just to say 'oh alright, you really want one, you can have it.' People do not have abortions if they don't really need one, that sort of thing is a myth that anti-choice people perpetuate to make themselves feel more justified.

Um, to clarify, I think it's bad to include an exception for anything other than danger of death to the mother or child, and that abortion can never be a solution to depression, so the depression loophole should (but won't) be sewn up.

I'm guessing that that wasn't your point.

My point is that he seems to think that rape is more traumatic if the victim either religious or abstinent, and that I'm alarmed that people who think that are making laws.

I know someone who was sufficiently scared and depressed by an unexpected and unwanted pregnancy that she felt her choices were abortion and suicide: she did not believe she would survive a pregnancy.

As a Christian, I'm horrified he wants to use my religion as a scapegoat for his political agenda.

As a woman, the least I'd like to do is spit on that man. I'm not sure words can express what I'd most like to do to him.

As a rape victim who, though a virgin at the time the rape took place, was not such because of religious reasons, taking over his body and doing whatever I like to it for nine months sounds like a good place to start, however.

Um. Are you reading a different article? Because what you've quoted isn't actually a quote from the article. It's a paraphrase of the 'worst case scenario' that he thought up on the spot as something which would definitely invoke the "mother's health in danger" clause due to purely psychological reasons. Those clauses that you quote were his example of Some Things Which Could Make It Worse, not necessarily the only things which would make it matter.

After the people jumping on Tony Blair for saying something offhand about how he'd considered God's opinion as well as the country's opinion when going to war against Iraq, I'm a little sensitive about people twisting the words of political figures to make them sound just a little bit worse. For all I know, he meant it that way (that rape in another situation wouldn't be really really bad, merely quite bad), but that isn't what he said.

FRED DE SAM LAZARO: Napoli says most abortions are performed for what he calls "convenience." He insists that exceptions can be made for rape or incest under the provision that protects the mother's life. I asked him for a scenario in which an exception may be invoked.

Bill NapoliBILL NAPOLI: A real-life description to me would be a rape victim, brutally raped, savaged. The girl was a virgin. She was religious. She planned on saving her virginity until she was married. She was brutalized and raped, sodomized as bad as you can possibly make it, and is impregnated. I mean, that girl could be so messed up, physically and psychologically, that carrying that child could very well threaten her life.

I don't know when a foetus becomes human - I tend to err on the safe side. I can totally respect someone saying 'I don't know, so I'll say at x weeks', 'when the heart starts beating' 'when it could survive being born'. I can respect that.

I agree that in certain circumstances, abortion may be necessary as a life-saving operation.

I have lived in SD my whole life and sadly Bill is my senator. I have never voted for him and never will. I just wish that everyone in here lived here and could vote for the other person. I really don't want that kind of guy to be making laws for me. Writting lot of letters to say how you feel to Rapidcity journal would be lots of help. Because with him out we don't have to hear his crap anymore.
