A week of picking on trans people

It's hardly unusual for trans people to be picked on by the rest of society, but this week has been egregious.

Firstly, there was the news story of the five-year-old child who was born male but wants to be a girl. Several national newspapers saw fit to publish not only this child's name but also the name of her school, some of them on the front page.

Secondly, the bookmaker Paddy Power ran a campaign which invited people at a racing meet to judge whether women were transgendered or cisgendered (the bookmaker asked people to "spot the stallions from the mares").

Thirdly, after a transsexual man reportedly recently gave birth in the UK, the Sun set up a hotline for its readers to tell its reporters where he lives. Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton, is to be commended for tabling an early day motion in the Commons condemning this behaviour.

And fourthly, the charity Plan UK decided to make a bus shelter advert that was visible only to female observers. This worked by using facial analysis software, and was apparently 90% accurate. It seems that nobody thought of the dangers inherent in having a machine declare a person's observed gender to the rest of the bus queue. (If the machine had a 10% false positive rate, can you imagine what a gift it would be to a bully waiting for the school bus?) Sarah Brown gave this device the wonderful name "Out-o-tron". Plan UK are not apologising and have permanently lost my support.

Where is this hatred coming from, and how do we stop it. I am appalled.

Wow. The amount of hatred in the story about the five-year-old was just... haertrending.

Holy fuck. That's all so very sick and wrong. Especially that poor girl—what kind of disgusting bully would do that to a five-year-old child?

I know someone who works for Plan Canada; I wonder if she knows about their UK ads.

If it's working on facial recognition, it's working on perceived sex, not perceived gender. Not the same thing, and not even really relevant to a lot of trans issues, at least the ones strictly involving gender itself. I'm assuming anyway that it works like standard facial-sex-recognition stuff and works by looking at bone structure and suchlike, rather than whether the person is, say, wearing makeup or a particular sort of hairstyle.

As someone who wishes gender would just DIAF already so she can get along with her life without having to be pigeonholed into a comprehensive schema of social control thanks to her anatomy, without really wishing to change that anatomy in any way, people who confuse the two really piss me off.

I've yet to find an easily defined set of definitions for the separation of "body format" and "mind format" and other associated elements that are universally accepted. For a while I tried to use "genotypical sex", "phenotypical sex" and "gender" but even these lead to confusion and, in some cases, anger, where my terms weren't acceptable to other trans people.

Let alone finding an easily defined set of definitions for what "gender" actually is (it's not a concept I grok at all).

Yup, this is me too.

Bigotry sucks.

I'm sorry for pissing you off! I usually try to maintain the distinction, but I made the wrong call here. I agree, facial structure is a sex issue and not a gender one, not a matter of presentation. Sorry.
