Current mood:silly

not an autobiographical parody
Because I could not wire a Plug,
It wired itself to me,
The carriage held but just ourselves,
And Electricity.

We passed the school, where children strove
To gain some erudition,
Ah! what a shame I did not learn
To be an electrician.

For who would think a wire called "live"
The life of humans halts?
My wiring style contains, I fear,
Two hundred forty faults.

Since then 'tis centuries, and yet
We drive for all we're worth;
The eternal heavens seem so live;
So neutral seemed the earth.

(I think Death demonstrates that the common metre can make even the best metaphor sound trite.)

The fact that common metre is so astoundingly common is not a good commentary on the profundity of hymns, is it?

I wish I remember who wrote

You simply carry on and on
And on and on in lines like this;
With lots of words like "benison",
And "paraclete" and "hark" and "bliss".

(Okay, it's 8/8/8/8, not 8/6/8/6, but it's too good not to quote. My mind is fitting it to Winchester New.)

Ooh, I got one to feel like it ended, for a change!

Dactyllic meter is pleasing to listen to.
Onward it lurches relentlessly carrying
List'ner and speaker together at breakneck speed,
Trippingly beautiful; difficult ending-wise.
Jig-like, the dactyl feels ever so danceable.
Other than endings I can't see why it's not more
Popular metrically; why not be jiggety?
Greek's not the only tongue dactyls are friendly to!
Poetry treble-time (duple here, hence the jig)
Causes one's toes to tap on every foot, you see.
Slip-jigs can work as well (think of the rocky road
Dublinward if you have ever a doubt of that);
Strathspey's more challenging; still I would wager that
Someone has pulled it off sometime in yesteryear.
